Stumbling Blocks to Joy

We choose our joys and sorrows long before we experience them.
- Kahlil Gibran

Experiencing JOY everyday. . . Is it really possible? Life is full of unexpected events, distractions, bad moods and illnesses. Can you honestly be joyous in the midst of these events, when things don’t go the way you think they should?

The truth is that God’s grace is new each morning, and joy is ours for the taking, but so often we choose to focus on the negative. What takes away your joy and peace? In my research of this topic, I was blessed to hear from so many moms and the feedback has been amazing! While the fun ideas on how to enjoy your family have abounded, what I found to be the most interesting was the comments concerning what stole your family’s joy. They really boiled down to 8 main themes, the first three of which we will discuss today: Comparison, Busyness, Health, Media, Scheduling, Worry, Interruptions, and Housework. Do you see yourself in this list?

The habit of comparison is an old friend of mine. I believe it’s a trait all women are born with, and regardless if you are a single woman, working mom or homeschooling mom, we all battle some form of this habit daily. From your comments, it appears that comparison shows no favorites – every aspect of life is up for scrutiny and evaluated against our perception of someone else. Whether it is that they have . . .

Review: Preschool Activities in a Bag AND Giveaway!

Preschoolers. . . Gotta love their energy! The world is an adventure and they are total sponges, absorbing everything that is around them. While this boundless exuberance can be a joy to behold and witness, at times it can also be a tad annoying. If you have ever been in a waiting room, a doctor’s office, in church or on an airplane with a preschooler, you have felt my pain. Or maybe you are a veteran homeschooling mom, attempting to teach multiple levels of older students with your preschooler demanding to be a part of it all, but really just driving everyone nuts. In situations like these, what’s a poor parent to do? Enter Preschool Activities In a Bag! (insert deep super hero announcer voice here)

Preschool Activities In a Bag, Book 1 is a compilation of over 30 different activities and games that are perfect for children under the age of six – but don’t be surprised if your older students ask to get in on the fun, too! Paula Reetz and Sherri MacLean designed each bag to contain self-guided activities that your children can do by themselves with minimal parental interaction. There are 11 main skill sets that are learned and enhanced with the activities: 123 Order, ABC Order, Color, Consumable, Motor Skills, Hand/Eye Coordination, Matching, Observation, Patterning, Puzzle and Sorting. One of the things that I love about this book is all of the helpful charts and descriptions that allow you to see at a glance what activities touch on what skill sets. If your child is having difficulty with motor skills, for example, you can quickly scan the chart and see there are 19 activities that focus on this skill. If your child is struggling with hand/eye coordination, you can tell which of the activities (there are 8 of them) would be good for your student to work on to develop this skill. Thus, the bags are not only fun for your children, and a much needed diversion, but they are very educational!

Another one of the reasons why I am now singing the praises of this book, and its authors, is. . .

Tea Time with Daddy

As I mentioned in my catch up post, we had a Tea Ceremony with Gregg this week. I wanted to share some of the pictures from that special time! It was really cute and it was a fun process to see!

So the tea starts out looking like this:

Then you put the bulb into hot water and after several minutes, it starts to open up, revealing the beautiful flower inside:

Cali loved watching the flower bloom and sitting next to her Daddy:

Finally, the tea was ready. Gregg poured the tea into a special cup with a strainer type thing on top (very technical words here, huh?) and then poured the tea from that into our new "official" China tea cups:
Jordan takes the first sip:

"Hmm, that was weird tasting":

Cali's turn:

"That was fun.... but that sip was enough":

Never one to miss out or be shown up, Jordan says, "Let's try that again":

And this face says, "Ok, that was fun, but can I just drink my chocolate milk, now?"

I can't wait to see what they think about our Chinese party this weekend!

Where, oh where, have I been?

HELLO!!

It has been awhile since my last post, sorry about that. So much has been going on the past two weeks!

The Amies asked me and Marsha to be their Assistants for The Heart of the Matter. We are really wanting to expand and we have so many ideas! With Gregg out of town last week, it was the perfect opportunity for group meetings at night (I love google group chat!), and during the day the girls and I were either busy learning about China or enjoying the lovely cool weather (unlike this week which is yucky, sticky hot). Gregg came in late Sunday night and we have had a BLAST learning with him about China and reconnecting as a family!

So what have we been doing this week for school? Sunday night we decorated our kitchen for Daddy's arrival with handmade Chinese lanterns and a welcome home sign in English/Chinese. I know this is dangerous, as I believe I was told that one slightly wrong placement of a line in a Chinese character can totally change the word, but for our purposes it worked and was fun! The sign reads "We Love You Daddy! Welcome Home" and the words "love," "Daddy," and "Home" are in Chinese. If anyone can read this and it is insulting, my sincere apologies (LOL!) We had fun going through all of the goodies he brought us back from China -- a name chop (something I told him about from our books we read last week and he was able to find! It is a tiger with a stamp on the bottom that says our last name in English and Chinese!), two puppets (a Chinese dragon and a Chinese tiger), painted masks (something we saw in Children Like Me), Chinese dolls, jasmine tea and a very nice tea set, beautiful silk pillows, a pretty jade necklace and a black pearl necklace (all things China is known for).

We had a really cool tea ceremony on Monday! Inside the tea leaves was a flower and you put it in hot water.... as you sit and watch, the tea leaves open and the flower is exposed. Very pretty! I am not really a tea drinker....or a hot drink drinker at all.... but it was fun to see and try. The girls tried it, too, and had mixed reactions. They said it was good but made funny faces and chose not to drink anymore LOL but they did try!

Tuesday we took the girls to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. The look of the building and the whole atmosphere was perfect -- the food, not so hot -- but hey it was an experience. They had pretty vases everywhere and a gift shop, and TONS of fish. Outside the restaurant was a water fountain, two stone Chinese tigers, and two ponds with lots of beautiful fish. The girls LOVED the fish! They kept squealing and saying "Look, look!" So that was a success.

We have been reading The Story About Ping and Jan Brett's Daisy Come Home, along with Ms. Frizzle's Adventures in Imperial China and Mulan. Sunday night we are having a Chinese party and I am making my homemade dumplings, Chinese rice and Hot and spicy chicken!

Finally, in other words.... I have been a very bad blogging friend. My girl Marsha is having a Bloggy Birthday Bash and is giving away TONS of stuff!!!! Awesome awesome prizes! There are two days left so please head over there and wish her a Happy Bloggy Birthday and try to win some cool gifts!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!

China Time

It has been a busy week! DH left for China early Saturday morning, which was more difficult for Jordan than we expected. . . She kept saying she wanted to go to China, too. Every time we go somewhere, she asks, "Are going to China to get Daddy?" But it has made it more fun to learn about China this week -- it feels like a real place now!

To introduce them to this new country, we have been looking at the globe a lot and tracing the path from Houston, Texas, to Shanghai, China. We have been making crafts that is a special surprise for Daddy (and since he is checking his email and subscribes to this blog via email, this will remain a surprise here, too!), coloring a lot of Kai-lan pictures, and playing dress up.

Our book sources this week are: Round is a Mooncake by Roseanne Thong (a cute rhyming story that focuses on shapes and light intro to Chinese culture), Good Morning China by Hu Yong Yi (simple story with pretty illustrations and introduction to some unique cultural things), Children Just Like Me: a unique celebration of children around the world a DK book (awesome resource for showing what children look like in different countries, some interesting facts and pictures), and Disney's Mulan!

Our multi-media resources include watching Mulan, A LOT of Ni Hao, Kai-lan, and an episode we have on tape of The Backyardigans tea party where they get a tea set from the Emperor. We have also watched some Kai-lan videos on the Nick Jr. site, as well as play some fun interactive games with the characters! I also love the sites indexed on the Shanghai American School's website to see some great virtual tours, cultural pictures and information. . . this one might be my favorite for Shanghai city pictures.

I am LOVING Ni Hao, Kai-lan, by the way! The girls are actually learning a lot of Chinese -- I have to keep asking Jordan how to count to three in Chinese but she always remembers! Both girls also pretend the sand outside is snow and call it snow in Chinese (I won't even attempt to spell that word here), they know how to say thank you and several other words. . . and if all that wasn't enough, it really has Jordan trying to problem solve like Kai-lan does. All day long, she sings the little song the characters sing on the show when they are trying to figure out why someone is feeling the way they are, and after she talks it out and figures it out, she gets so excited! I used this as a learning moment the other day. She started singing the song, "We gotta, gotta, try, to find the reason why... Why Mommy put me in time out?" LOL!!! So after her timeout was over, I helped her walk through the steps like Kai-lan did and she then said why she was in time out, and then went the extra step like Kai-lan does to figure out what she could have done instead! Now that is good educational programming, in my eyes!

Gregg comes home Sunday evening! The main highlight of course is having him HOME, but we are also excited to see all the pictures and goodies he is bringing with him, as we will continue learning about China next week, too! We will be reading Daisy Comes Home by Jan Brett, The Story about Ping by Marjorie Flack and Ms. Frizzle's Adventures n Imperial Chna by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. We will take the girls to eat at a Chinese restaurant and for a tour of the Forbidden Gardens in Katy Texas, and it will also give me a reason to make my YUMMY homemade pork dumplings!

What are you all learning this week?

Experiencing Joy in the Ministry of Motherhood. . .

"This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote
itself to making you happy." - George Bernard Shaw

Do you view your role as a Mother to be a “mighty one?” I do. I believe with all my heart that Motherhood is a Ministry, and that we have been called and equipped by God to raise up the next generation. I must admit, I didn’t always feel this way.

About a year and a half ago, I was really struggling with what I felt was a calling to homeschool my two beautiful girls. I knew that I loved being a mother, and that the more I thought about homeschooling, the more I fell in love with the idea, but I wondered if it was enough. I had just gotten done reading The Purpose Driven Life and I was trying to find what it was that I was uniquely shaped to do. In my mind, I somehow assumed the only way I could truly be used by God was within the church, so I looked into Youth Ministry. I found some great programs and it all sounded wonderful, but it truly was not where my heart was . . . My heart was with my family and with homeschooling.

I continued this internal struggle until last April when I attended a Walk to Emmaus retreat with my church. I didn’t know what to expect from the retreat, but I went into the weekend prayerfully, asking God to clearly show me what He wanted for my life. Why do I continue to be surprised when He answers above and beyond my expectations?!? Our God is so good! Imagine my shock when . . .

Our Final Week with Space...

It has been fun learning about space the last few weeks. So far we have visited the Moon, the Sun and Stars and this week we are learning more about the planets. While it has been fun, I am definitely ready to move onto a new topic :-)

This week we are using There's No Place Like Space by Tish Rabe as our main resource and supplementing with Galactic Goodnight from the Little Einsteins, a few Magic School Bus books and videos, songs and several fun art projects. We are also focusing on the letter "E" this week for our alphabet lapbook/notebook, so we are talking about the Earth (obviously), Eagles, Elephants and Easter Eggs.

This week has been really relaxed, but it has been fun seeing how much they know and remember all on their own. This weekend Jordan looked up into the sky and said, "Look at all the constellations!" And while I do ask them questions and talk about the story after we read it, the success of this is hit or miss -- however, I can always tell what they comprehended and learned during their playtime! Lately, Jordan in particular loves to pretend to be an astronaut and go for trips in her rocket ship to the Moon, Venus or Mars. Cali loves to play along, too. I look at all of this as beginning narration skills :-)
Here are some of the highlights of this week so far:

-We sang He's Got The Whole World In His Hands a lot, and made an art project to go along. We cut out a blue circle and glued (Cali's favorite part of any project) it onto a white piece of construction paper. Then we glued (another squeal from Cali) cotton balls onto the blue circle to be clouds. I intended to put their hands in finger paint and put their handprints on the bottom of the paper with the words "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" written above it. This went wonderfully with Jordan. Cali, however, I have learned is a lot like her Mama --- she wrinkled her nose when I dipped her fingers in the paint and I could have sworn she said "Ewww" LOL! This isn't the first time they have finger painted, but it has been awhile and the last few times may have been during Cali's naps, so I guess she has changed her opinion on the fun of getting messy! I tried a few different times with different things, but she wanted no part of it. She did, however, like the idea of coloring on her picture, so she did that :-)

- Watched Dumbo to go along with the "E" for Elephant theme. Yesterday we had a lot of fun playing at the playground with some other homeschool families but it wore us out -- and coupled with the overcast weather, we were all exhausted. So we curled up on the sofa, got under a big fluffy blanket and had fun watching this movie together!

- Made stick puppets of an eagle and an elephant and put on some plays with them -- mostly Jordan does the play and I watch, or she tells me what to say LOL

- Watched videos of baby elephants online from the Ringling Brothers' site

- Did A LOT of pretending to be astronauts going on various adventures

- Talked about Meteorologists and Astronomers, and how in the story Thing One and Thing Two wanted to be Astronomers. I asked Jordan if she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up and she thought for a while. . . I started giving some ideas and she said "Yes" enthusiastically to each one -- teacher, doctor, scientist, photographer, astronomer -- but when I said "Dancer" she got really excited! I then started asking her if she would rather be a dancer or a gymnast (answer- dancer). A dancer or a doctor (dancer). A photographer or a dancer (thought I would mix up the order a bit, but she still said dancer). She then told me, "I LOVE to Dance!" Oh brother....should we start saving for lessons yet?

We are also loving having Daddy home more. This new job and schedule has him home before 6:00 every night! We have played many rounds of hide-n-seek and yesterday Jordan got a special outing date with Daddy to the playground after work. He has special dates with each girl once a month and Jordan was wanting to learn how to slide down a pole, something Mommy has yet to learn how to do herself (ha!), so this was a perfect opportunity. Cali came with me to the grocery store and I was amazed at the difference in shopping with only one child!! Sooo much easier :-)
Tomorrow night will be Family Movie Night which will be a lot of fun before he leaves for China for 10 days on Saturday. Next week the girls and I start our two week trip to China -- through books and their new favorite show Ni Hao, Kai-lan. Daddy is going to bring a Flat Stanley with him to take pictures, which I think the girls will really enjoy seeing!
Have a great weekend!!

Renewed Excitement for our Homeschool!

I am SO excited!!

I have been in planning mode for next year. I am really trying to take each year as it comes, but I do have a rough plan for where this homeschool journey will take us in the future. Not only have I done this for financial planning (so we can know when we really need to put homeschool supplies into our Dave Ramsey budget), but also as an assignment from Simply Charlotte Mason. They suggest, and I agree, that it will help to know when I plan to teach what subjects from K-12.... not what supplier I will use, but the basic subjects so that I can see the vision and can better make my choices for those years as they come up.

I knew that I was going to be using FIAR next year (our school year runs from January-December, so next year starts January 2009). The girls might be on the younger ages of this curriculum, but they are ready for it and we will take it slow. My only concern was ways to make it fun. FIAR is a very fun curriculum, but a lot of people supplement with arts and crafts, which as much as I would love to say we do, we just don't. I was never into them, but I have really tried to do them with my girls, but so far no interest there either. I will continue to try as they get older, as it would be fun for me to recapture this part of my childhood, but I also know that they might never be interested in them. So, what could I do?

I had heard about Galloping the Globe a few times before and had even looked at it briefly. I saw that it was for K-4th, so I just put it off as a possibility for the future. Recently there was a discussion about it on the FIAR boards and I learned that it was written by a FIAR mom! They said that it was very compatible, so I decided to look into it a bit more. In doing so, I learned that many moms use it with 4 year olds and have a blast. During this same time, I received two emails from some lovely women who read this blog (I love to get these emails!!) and they were asking about how I homeschool and my plans, etc; While writing back and forth with these women, I realized the things that do work really well with my girls (instead of focusing on what doesn't, like the crafts), and I realized that they LOVE to look at the globe and see where the characters live that we are reading about. They LOVE to bake and cook, especially when the recipe ties into what we are reading. They LOVE to see pictures of children, especially from other countries and learning how they are different. They LOVE to learn about the world (almost every story Jordan writes or narrates to me begins with "Dear Jordan, Got to see the world!") This is what Galloping the Globe is all about!!!!

I joined the wonderful ladies at the yahoo group and have gotten so much positive reinforcement from other moms who use it with young children or who have in the past. I wouldn't use all of the resources that they recommend, but I can always come back and use them again! I plan on doing this right alongside FIAR and HSS, and there are other moms on the yahoo group who also will be doing the exact same thing!

While driving to Dallas this weekend with my husband for our last Discovery weekend, I further discovered "what kind of homeschool" we are! Some say that they are a history driven homeschool, others are science driven and others are language arts focused. We definitely have a passion for history and for creative writing, but both my husband and I love learning about different cultures and traveling! Apparently we have either instilled this in our girls or it is a trait you are born with, but they have this passion as well. So, we are a homeschool that is driven to learn about different cultures as they really are (not just the sugar coated version you get in some schools today), to learn about the bigger world out there, the history and heritage of our own wonderful country, and one that is passionate about expressing our thoughts and opinions through the written word!

I know that how we implement this vision can be altered through the years, as their own unique interests and talents are discovered, but I also don't think that our overall goals will. These are the types of things that we want our girls to learn about, to discover about themselves and the wonderfully big world that God created around them. It is also a nice way to cultivate family memories and teach skills like cooking and baking, map skills, research skills and critical thinking. I am excited to have a new vision for our school and to realize some unique strengths and interests that my girls have!

What type of homeschool are you?

Reclaiming My Health. . .

Good Morning and Happy Monday!!

Sorry it has been awhile since my last posting! We had a wonderful and busy week! It was our first official week with the flip-flopped schedule I talked about in my article for Heart of the Matter. We have switched our day around and so far it is working much better. It still needs some tweaking, but I am breathing again and enjoying the process and my time with the girls much more :-)

I have also started back on my journey to health. You may notice some of my sayings on my blog like "I am a Beautiful and Confident Princess of the King, Crawling into my Heavenly Father's lap and LETTING Him love on me daily." and "My Mission is to encourage Moms to experience JOY in the Ministry of Motherhood!" Last summer, my husband and I started attending a series of weekend seminars called Discovery, which is where I created these visions for myself. During the past ten months we have attended 5 different weekends, most recently this past weekend, and each time we have come back with a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationship with each other.

I have always battled with low self worth and have always found my worth in others eyes, in particular with my appearance and weight. When I didn't feel as though I would measure up in these areas, I would always play the Nice Guy and would try to be all things to all people, thinking that if they at least thought I was nice they would like me. I fell into a trap of signing up to do everything that came up, wanting to make new friends, wanting others to think I had it all together, not wanting to miss out on opportunities to cultivate friendships and thinking that if I didn't sign up, that someone would think less of me. That led me to last year, doing two-three bible studies at a time, teaching Sunday School, being a member of a few Christian women groups, on top of trying to lose a ton of weight and be the perfect housewife and homeschooling mother I could be. The result of all this busyness was feelings of guilt, still not feeling as though I was doing enough, feelings of not being enough on my own, and mostly, feelings of pure exhaustion!

My first weekend back in August helped me to start the healing process with my self image, and the following weekend helped me to see the negative underlying causes for doing all of the activities I was involved in. Yes, many of them were good things and had good outcomes - a deeper understanding of my faith and better prayer life, as well as friendships - but many of them were done for the wrong reasons. I decided to step back from everything, and to really evaluate every opportunity that came my way... what was my motivation for wanting to join or do that activity, and would it add value to my family? While all of this has been GREAT and I have gotten my priorities straight again -- FAMILY FIRST -- with that freedom also came the freedom from my fitness regime that I was on. Admittedly, it was an unhealthy regime, consisting of exercising at least an hour and a half and skipping lunch most days. I did lose weight but the second I started eating lunch again and decreased on the exercise, I started to gain it back. Then enter the holidays and the total abandonment of exercise and I have now gained 15 pounds since September!

What the past few months have been about for me is getting my priorities straight, learning new ways of accomplishing some of the things that kept me busy before and creating closer relationships with my family. NOW it is time to focus more on myself again and reclaim my health, but in positive ways, using tools that I have learned through my Discovery weekends. My personality is an All or Nothing approach normally, where I would jump in with exercising like crazy, a strict diet and giving up all treats. What I have learned about myself is that if I do that, I will fail and the failure will cause me to quit. I have to learn new behaviors, behaviors that may result in me losing weight slower than I would like, but behaviors that can last a lifetime! So, what am I going to do???

This week I am starting back on Weight Watchers. I have had success with this program in the past, but have also ended up forever thinking about food and being obsessed with counting. . . that aspect was not healthy for me. My plan is to come up with a series of menus that are WW friendly and planning those in advance, without having to worry about counting so much, with the exception of a few days when we want to go out or want to try a new recipe. For fitness, I am going to try to be more realistic. I used to wake up at 5:00 every morning and walk/run 3 miles, do a Walk away the pounds video a couple hours later, and then another one a few hours after that. What I have decided to do now is wake up at 6:00 am and walk/jog 1 mile every morning. This will also serve as Quiet Time in prayer as I experience God's presence so much in nature and in the early quiet hours. I will then do 1 Walk away the pounds video later in the day WITH the girls, so that I can begin to instill in them the importance and habit of daily exercise. That will be my daily fitness. My husband has also agreed to work with me two nights a week doing the two videos I purchased from Jillian Michaels from The Biggest Loser. If you haven't heard of these videos and are looking for something to pump up your workout, THIS IS IT! Each video is a little less than 30 minutes but oh my goodness!! You are sweating within the first couple minutes, during the warm up! This will challenge me a bit more, and give some time with my husband, but will be a new step for me as my normal pattern would be to do them daily and then get worn out and quit!

So, why am I telling you all of this? I wanted to publicly declare my committed efforts to my health and to share a bit of my journey with you. I would LOVE it if others choose to join me and we can create an accountability group of sorts, and would love any yummy, healthy recipes you have :-) Most of all, I wanted to encourage anyone else out there who has, like me, taken a step back from taking care of themselves to begin again with me. Let's get healthy for the RIGHT reasons -- for ourselves, to prove that we can, so we can be sexy for summer (ha!), and so we can set good examples for our children!

Will you join me?

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Our week with the Moon went very well. The girls loved learning about Astronauts and the different phases of the moon. We ate crescent rolls and baked a cake that we then iced to demonstrate the different phases of the moon (and let's face it, was just plain fun to eat!) They loved Space Boy and today while playing astronaut, a game they came up, they pretty much acted out the story: Jordan recited her checklist for her space outfit (space suit, helmet and space boots - check, check, check), floating away tomatoes (from their space snack due to the lack of gravity), bouncing over mountains and falling into craters -- OK, the last part was Magic School Bus, but they knew that the moon had craters so that is pretty cool in my book!

The girls are really enjoying learning about Space and I am doing much better with the whole teaching part, too. It is a weird balance trying to expose them to different things and great books, especially ones that they want to learn about, and really not wanting to overload them with information that is over their level. I think we do a pretty good job at doing this, but it definitely helps when they have age appropriate living picture books with good stories! I have also loved being able to supplement the week with the fun ideas and activities through Preschool Post and Bright Beginnings.

So this week we are studying Stars and the Sun. For this week, I have written units for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by Iza Trapani and The Sun Is My Favorite Star by Frank Asch. These are our main books for the week, and we are supplementing with I Am a Star by Jean Marzollo (a Hello Reader! Level 1 Science book), and The Magic School Bus Sees Stars, although this one is a little longer and drier than most of the other MSB books we have read. Mommy is also using Find the Constellations by H.A. Rey this week to learn a bit, as we plan on taking the girls out one night to star gaze.

Bright Beginnings had both a Sun and a Star theme week in their Prep Curriculum, so I just combined the two and picked the things we wanted to use. We are adding in fun television programs and online books, games and videos about space and stars.

The other thing we are starting this week is the new alphabet lapbook/notebook from HomeschoolShare. While both girls know the alphabet and all the sounds, I thought this would be a fun activity to do to really concentrate on a letter at a time for reinforcement. I had already pretty much planned out the rest of this year based on the remaining BFIAR books and HSS units we wanted to do before starting FIAR next year (for now, our school year will begin in January and end in December, so next year starts January 2009), so it was somewhat easy to see what letters we should study when. We are not doing them in order, but since this is just review, I thought it would be OK. So this week, although "S" would make sense, I couldn't find a good place to stick the letter "O" so we are studying that this week..... because...... Earth and the planets Orbit around the Sun, and the moon Orbits around the Earth.... get it? They don't seem to mind the stretch! :-) This is also working out nicely and allows me to continue to keep the lapbooking and arts/crafts in, while not having to do too much (during arts and crafts time, they REALLY out number me)!

So.... that is what we are doing this week. I would love to hear what you are learning about in your homeschool this week!

Silly Songs with Mommy

I got an email the other day from Positively Feminine and it included an article that could have been written by me called Silly Songs With Mommy. This is such a cute article about a mom who makes up songs with her children about everything -- so nice to read about a kindred spirit!

I have mentioned before how much I love to sing all day -- now, mind you, I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but as my Mama always said, "This is the voice God gave me, so it must be the voice He wants to hear me sing in!"

I make up songs about anything and everything -- and the great part is that my girls are REALLY learning because of it! So far, via song my girls have both learned:

  • Their complete address including city, state and zipcode
  • Their phone number
  • How to spell their first and last names
  • How to spell each other's names
  • And a variety of prayers
I am sure there are tons more things that we have taught them through song that I am forgetting right now, but the point is that it works -- and they are only 3 and 2! We sing all the things above at least once a day, often more because it is so much fun for them! I feel good knowing that if anything should ever happen and they need to tell someone where we live or how to reach us, that they should be able to do so. And I don't feel like I am "teaching" when we do it in song -- it is fun for me, too!

I wonder how long I can carry this teaching tool. Will I be singing grammar facts and multiplication tables? Hey, if it works . . .

What fun teaching tools work well for you and your family?
